['mɛlu], Francisco Manuel de, portugiesischer Schriftsteller, Pseudonym Clemente Libertino [liβer'tinu], * Lissabon 23. 11. 1608, ✝ ebenda 13. 10. 1666; war Soldat in spanischen Diensten, nach 1640 im Dienst König Johanns IV. von Portugal, wurde wegen eines Liebesabenteuers 1644 lange Jahre eingekerkert und 1655-58 nach Brasilien verbannt; zuletzt war er auf Gesandtschaftsreisen in Europa. Melo schrieb in spanischer und portugiesischer Sprache. Er war bedeutend als Historiker, Moralist, Lyriker, Dramatiker und Kritiker. Seine Vorbilder waren u. a. L. de Góngora y Argote, F. Gómez de Quevedo y Villegas und B. Gracián y Morales.
 
Werke: Geschichtsschreibung: História de los movimientos y separación de Cataluña (1645); Epanáforas de vária história portuguesa (1660).
 
Religiöse und moralische Abhandlungen: Carta de guia de casados (1651); Apólogos dialogaes (herausgegeben 1721).
 
Komödie: Auto do fidalgo aprendiz (entstanden 1646, erschienen 1665).
 
Lyrik: Obras métricas (1665).
 
Briefe: Cartas familiares (1664).
